Job Summary

This Customer Service Technician position primary responsibilities are to provide maintenance of outside plant copper and fiber. Position will also when required by load, install and repair voice and HSI service to residential and small business customers along with suggested solutions for their service needs, and taking advantage of sales opportunities as they arise.

Job Description

  • Analyze and troubleshoot cable and fiber faults to include pressurized and filled cable.
  • Repair cut cable of all sizes.
  • Use test equipment to isolate location of faults to include copper and fiber cable.
  • Use FB Viewer to interpret cable routes.
  • Repair cables in manhole, buried or aerial.
  • Be first of scene of damages to determine party at fault and complete damage forms.
  • Ability to operate backhoe, bucket truck and manhole package safely to perform repairs. .
  • Test and check equipment and/or assists other employees in testing and checking equipment.
  • Use hand tools, power tools (air and electric), and specialty tools, including electric and electronic measuring devices (e. g., multi-meters, volt-ohm meters)
  • Perform continuity and/or conformance testing.
  • Read and interpret customer service orders, repair tickets, technical (i. e., mechanical, electrical, digital) drawings, maps, blueprints, diagrams, etc. from supervisor or other designated employees and perform specified work.
  • Work with telecom color-coded wires and cables.
  • Actively support sales and marketing related activities through the YouCan Program
  • Perform installation and repair of voice services when load warrants.
  • Perform installation and repair of HSI services when load warrants to include bonded HSI and VDSL.


  • A combination of education and relevant work experience totaling three (3) years post-high school or equivalent.
  • Three or more (3+) years of service in installation and repair of R1/B1 service and associated jacks and wire
  • Three or more (3+) years of experience running cable trouble.
  • Experience installing cable terminals and sleeves
  • Ability to change out buried pedestals that have been damaged.
  • Ability to climb poles and lift heavy loads up to 100 lbs., including 75 lbs. ladder
  • Ability to use cable test equipment and span line test equipment
  • Ability to read cut sheets and OSP engineering drawings
  • Knowledge of ISDN
  • Ability to perform LST's and run jumpers on the MDF
  • Knowledge of basic electricity as it relates to telecommunications.
  • Working knowledge of hand and power tools
  • Working knowledge of test equipment (e. g., Tech Tad, Sidekick, volt-ohm meters, transmission measuring sets, HST-3000)
  • Ability to use established electrical, digital, and/or mechanical principals and to perform appropriate tests to identify and solve problems encountered on the job.
  • Ability to efficiently and accurately work with multiple types of information and/or perform multiple tasks simultaneously
  • Ability to complete designated amount of work in a specified timeframe (e. g., quality jobs per day), adjusting work assignments or schedules to meet changing work-related priorities or demands
  • Ability to provide efficient, quality service to both internal and external customers
  • Ability to work well with others to achieve common goals and to foster a cooperative climate, as well as to work independently in the field with little supervision
  • Ability to perceive differences in telecom wire and cable color
  • Ability to climb and work at elevations (e. g., from ladders, poles, lift trucks) exceeding 18 feet.
  • Ability to work in confined spaces (e. g., attics, crawl spaces, utility holes).
  • Ability to work well with people
  • Ability to work out of town if necessary
  • Ability to perform job activities outdoors in different weather conditions (e. g., extreme cold and/or heat, inclement weather)
  • Ability to perform splicing rearrangements on existing facilities in buried, underground, aerial, building work locations and on all other types of outside plant facilities where the work requires cable sheath openings.
  • Strong interpersonal communication skills for communicating CenturyLink s products and services to customers
  • Ability to work out of town if necessary
  • Ability to work varying shifts and hours including possible mandatory overtime, weekends, holidays and call-outs
  • Possession of a valid driver's license with ability to maintain a safe driving record

Preferred Qualifications:

  • At least 12 months experience within the last 5 years installing, repairing/maintaining, and testing residential/small business/government telecommunication service (POTS and HSI), including Design Services
  • At least 12 months of experience within the last 5 years connecting telecom color-coded wires and cables to terminals, attaching or detaching various kinds of hardware to wires, cables, buildings and poles.
  • At least 12 months experience within the last 5 years splicing copper and fiber in an underground, aerial, or buried environment
  • At least 12 months experience within the last 5 years maintaining, service and monitoring air pressure systems and dryers in all environments
  • At least 6 months of experience within the last 5 years on a cosmic or conventional (MDF) frame.
